How to Get to the Ourika Valley from Marrakech (2026 Prices)
How to get to Ourika Valley from Marrakech by bus, grand taxi, private driver or car, with distances, dated prices, parking tips and a map pin from a local.

The Ourika Valley starts about 30–35 km south-east of Marrakech. Setti Fatma, at the end of the paved road, is about 60–65 km away, 1 to 1.5 hours by car. Here is how to get to Ourika Valley from Marrakech by bus, grand taxi, private driver or your own car, with dated prices, and how I can help if you have no transport.
Quick answer: The cheap, quick way is a shared grand taxi: around 30 MAD a seat (2024 reports), leaving when all the seats are sold. A private driver for the day costs around 500–600 MAD per car (2025 report), and the drive to Setti Fatma takes 1 to 1.5 hours.
Ourika Valley distance from Marrakech and travel time
I'm Khalid. I was born in this valley, and I'm Amazigh, the name we use for ourselves; outsiders often say Berber. I meet my guests near the top end of this road. The Reddit threads and old forum posts about getting here don't agree, so here are my answers, with dates. I'll update them every year.
| From central Marrakech to... | Distance by road | Time by car, no stops |
|---|---|---|
| Tnine Ourika (start of the valley) | about 35 km | about 45–50 minutes |
| Aghbalou | about 50–55 km | about 1 hour |
| Maison du Meunier Berbère (my meeting point) | about 60 km | 1 to 1.5 hours |
| Setti Fatma (end of the paved road) | about 60–65 km | 1 to 1.5 hours |
Weekends are busier, and on Monday mornings the market can slow you down in Tnine.
Option 1: Ourika Valley bus from Marrakech
Alsa runs the city buses in Marrakech. A 2025 travel blog says line L25 goes to the start of the valley from the Bab Er Rob area, south of the medina. Wikivoyage lists lines L25 and L40 at 7.5 MAD, but that listing has no date. Lines and fares change, so check the line and stop at your riad or at the bus stop before you go.
- There's no direct Marrakech to Setti Fatma bus from Alsa in any recent report. The bus stops in the lower valley, around Tnine Ourika. Locals also use small green minibuses, but they're hard to figure out as a visitor.
- From there, shared taxis go up the valley, around 10 MAD a seat (2025 report). It's roughly 45 minutes more to Setti Fatma.
- It's slow. With changes and waiting, count on roughly two hours or more.
Option 2: grand taxi to Ourika (shared)
Grands taxis are the big shared taxis. Lots of local people use them to go up and down this valley.
Where they wait. The station keeps moving; forum posts complained about that back in 2015. In July 2024, a forum post placed the Ourika taxis at Sidi Mimoun, next to the Hotel Tazi, a short walk from the Koutoubia mosque. A 2025 blog puts the terminal about 3 km outside the Bab Er Rob gate. Ask your riad on the morning you go.
Price. Around 30 MAD a seat to Setti Fatma (July 2024 forum reports), roughly 3 euros. The same 2025 blog says the ride takes about 1.5 hours.
What "leaves when full" means. There's no timetable. The taxi goes when every seat is sold, usually six. If you're the first one in, you wait, and in low season that can take a while. In a hurry? Buy the empty seats.
Getting off at the right place. Tell the driver your stop before you sit down: Tnine, Aghbalou or Setti Fatma. Coming to meet me? Show him the map pin on your phone. Agree the price to your stop, and pay in small notes.
Option 3: private taxi or driver for the day
This is the easiest way without a tour. The driver takes you up, waits, and brings you back. A 2025 report gives around 500–600 MAD per car for the day, roughly 45–55 euros. In 2015, a forum poster paid 400. Prices, like this road, only go up.
- Agree everything first: hours, stops, waiting time, and if the price is per car or per person.
- Say it back: "600 dirhams, the whole car, back at 5 pm, yes?" Pay at the end.
- No shops? Some drivers, like many tours, stop at argan or carpet shops. Say so at the start.
Split three or four ways, a private car comes to roughly 125–200 MAD each. That's about the same as, or less than, a group tour, which a 2025 report puts at around 200–250 MAD per person.
Option 4: the Ourika Valley by car
Can you drive to the Ourika Valley? Yes. The road is paved all the way to Setti Fatma. It's mostly flat across the plain, then narrower, with more bends along the river after Aghbalou.
- Go slowly on the bends. Grand taxis and minibuses overtake in places you wouldn't.
- Expect people, donkeys, goats and children at the edge of every village.
- Fill up with fuel in Marrakech, and drive back before dark if you can.
- You may pass a police checkpoint. Keep your licence and rental papers handy.
Ourika Valley parking and the parking "helpers"
At Setti Fatma, men wave you into a space and then ask for money. Some are real car guards. Some are just "helpful." Expect to be asked for a small fee. Agree the price before you leave the car. Wikivoyage's tip: ignore people who offer to direct you, and park along the river.
I'd add one thing: in summer storm season, don't park right next to the water, because the river can rise fast. My guide to the best time to visit the Ourika Valley explains the flood months. Driving to meet me? Ask me on WhatsApp where to leave your car near the Maison du Meunier Berbère.
Option 5: ask your guide to help with transport
My hikes don't include a pickup in Marrakech. You make your own way to the meeting point we agree, about an hour by car from the city. For Villages, Caves & Waterfalls, that's the bridge near the Maison du Meunier Berbère. No car or driver? Tell me when you book, and I can help organise transport. The same goes for my Full Day from Marrakech: a long trek, a lunch stop in the valley (you pay for your own food), and back to the city by sunset. Ask me on WhatsApp what the ride costs on your day. Cars can't get into most medina lanes, so if a driver collects you from a riad, it usually happens at a nearby main road or gate.
We agree everything on WhatsApp before the day: the hike, the price and, if you need it, the ride. No bargaining on the morning.
The road from Marrakech, stop by stop
- Tnine Ourika, about 35 km. The first big village, at the mouth of the valley. Tnine means Monday, the day of the weekly souk. About 5 km before it, by the road, are the ruins of Aghmat, the Almoravids' first capital before they founded Marrakech.
- Aghbalou, about 50–55 km. Near here, a side road climbs to Oukaïmeden, a ski station with rock carvings, many of them around 4,000 years old. For Setti Fatma, keep straight on.
- Along the river. The valley closes in. Cafés put their tables at the water's edge, and small bridges cross the river.
- The Maison du Meunier Berbère, my meeting point. A Berber miller's house on the main road in Asgaour, about 2 km before Setti Fatma. We start from the bridge nearby. Pin: 31.23679 N, 7.66503 W. Open it in Google Maps.
- Setti Fatma, about 60–65 km. The end of the paved road, roughly 1,500 metres up. The first of the seven waterfalls is a steep 20-minute walk. My Setti Fatma waterfalls guide has the trail, and my list of things to do in the Ourika Valley has the rest.

Marrakech airport to the Ourika Valley, and a note for Agadir
From Marrakech Menara airport (RAK), my meeting point is about 65–70 km away by road, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours. Route planners estimate a taxi at around 550–700 MAD (2026 online estimate). Agree the price before you get in.
My honest advice: if you land late, sleep in Marrakech and come up in the morning. Mountain bends in the dark after a flight are nobody's idea of a holiday. Coming from Agadir? That's a much longer day, and I explain it in my Ourika Valley day trip guide.
Getting back to Marrakech without getting stuck
- Shared taxis go back from a taxi stand in Setti Fatma, and in the daytime there's traffic both ways.
- The afternoon is easiest. As it gets dark, taxis can be harder to find, and you may have to pay for the empty seats. Came by bus? Ask the driver on the way up when the last one goes back.
- Keep enough cash in dirhams for the ride home.
- Dark clouds over the peaks in the afternoon? Leave early.

Come up the valley with me
Don't want to hunt for a taxi station? Tell me when you book, and I can help organise your ride. Already have a car, a driver or a taxi seat? Meet me at the Maison du Meunier Berbère pin for Villages, Caves & Waterfalls: five moderate hours, private or shared, for groups of up to 7, through my village in the Ourika Valley, dry desert-like hills, a cave and waterfalls. A recent group met goats, villagers, a bat and beetles big enough to need their own taxi seat. Shared hikes cost 200–300 MAD per person (about €18–28), and private ones 400–600 MAD for the whole group (about €37–55), depending on the length; on your own or as a couple, I match you with other travellers on the same day. FAQ
How far is the Ourika Valley from Marrakech by car?
The valley starts about 30–35 km from Marrakech, at Tnine Ourika. Setti Fatma, at the end of the paved road, is about 60–65 km away. Without stops, that's 1 to 1.5 hours by car.
How much is a taxi from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley?
A seat in a shared grand taxi was around 30 MAD in 2024 forum reports. A private driver for the whole day was around 500–600 MAD per car in a 2025 report. Agree the price, the hours and the stops before you get in.
Is the road to the Ourika Valley safe?
Yes, for a careful driver in daylight. It's paved all the way to Setti Fatma, with bends after Aghbalou and fast taxis overtaking. The bigger risk is the river in summer storms: flash floods hit in August 1995 and August 2025, so move away from the bank if the water turns brown or rises.
Is there an entrance fee for the Ourika Valley?
No. The valley is open road and villages, with no ticket to get in. You pay for transport, parking, food and any guide you hire. Some private attractions along the road may charge their own entry.
Can I explore the Ourika Valley without a guide?
Yes, for Setti Fatma and the first waterfall. The paths between villages and up into the hills have no signs, and that's where a local guide helps. I wrote an honest guide to the Ourika Valley without a guide, with what the Setti Fatma guides charge.
