How much to tip a tour guide in Morocco, from a guide: clear numbers for half and full days, drivers, mule handlers and village families. Questions? Ask me.

Khalid, a local tour guide in Morocco's Ourika Valley, smiling with his hiking pole on the trail

How much to tip a tour guide in Morocco? I'm a guide, so I'll just say it: for a private half day, about 100 dirhams (MAD) per person, or 200–300 MAD for the whole group. For a full day, about 150 MAD per person, or 300–400 MAD per group.

Quick answer: Tipping is welcome but never required. About 100 MAD (roughly €9 / $10) per person for a half day, or 150 MAD for a full day, is generous for a private guide; groups can give 200–400 MAD together.

I'm Khalid. I was born in the Ourika Valley, and I'm Amazigh, the name we use for ourselves; outsiders often say Berber. Most guests are too polite to ask about tips, so here is everything, honestly.

Do you tip guides in Morocco? Welcome, never required

Yes, tipping is normal in Moroccan tourism, and it is a real part of a guide's income. But it is never required. If your day was bad, don't tip. If tipping feels strange in your culture, that's fine too. I promise I won't follow you to the car.

How much to tip a tour guide in Morocco

My numbers for a private guide, in the mountains or in Marrakech (shared bus tours are lower, see below):

Tour length Per person Or for the whole group Roughly in € / $
Half day (3–5 hours) about 100 MAD 200–300 MAD 100 MAD ≈ €9 / $10; 300 MAD ≈ €27 / $31
Full day (6–9 hours) about 150 MAD 300–400 MAD 150 MAD ≈ €14 / $15; 400 MAD ≈ €36 / $41
Multi-day trek ask your company plus a little for the mule team see the Toubkal section

Conversions use mid-October 2026 rates (about 11 MAD to €1, about 9.8 MAD to $1). Rates move, so check on the day. Per person works for one to three people; for a family or a big group, use the group number. Nobody counts heads.

En français : combien de pourboire pour un guide au Maroc ? Environ 100 MAD par personne pour une demi-journée, 150 MAD pour une journée.

Why the numbers online disagree

Source What it suggests Written for
Intrepid trip notes USD 2–4 per person per day for drivers, 4–7 USD/EUR per traveller per day for the trip leader; an optional group kitty covers drivers and local helpers Group trips
Taste of Maroc (last updated 2022) 100 MAD per person half day, 150 full day; or 200–300 / 300–400 MAD per group Private or small-group tours
Conversant Traveller (updated 2025) 100–150 MAD for a full day with a guide Independent travellers
Rediscover 100–150 MAD per person in total for a 1–3 day trek Organised treks

Why the gap? Some numbers are per person, some per group. A guide with 15 people on a bus gets many small tips; a private guide with two people gets two. And some pages are years old.

Tipping on a hiking day in the Atlas

How much to tip a hiking guide? A hiking day can have several helpers:

  • The guide: use the table above.
  • The driver, if he is not also your guide: Taste of Maroc suggests about 100 MAD per group for a half day and 200 MAD for a full day. My hikes don't include transport from Marrakech, so this only matters if you hire a driver; if you have no car, I can help you organise one when you book. Ask me on WhatsApp who will drive, so you know who to thank at the end.
  • The mule handler, if a mule carries water or lunch: a smaller tip than the guide, given to him directly. Most day hikes don't need a mule; ask me if yours will have one.
  • The family who serves tea or lunch: on my Tea & Tagine at Home tour, you eat with a village family. Lunch is not included in my price, so you pay for the meal; ask me on WhatsApp how it works, and any extra thank-you for the family is up to you.

Earth-and-stone houses of a Berber village in the Ourika Valley

In general, when a meal is part of a tour price, the family has been paid, and Taste of Maroc notes a tip is not expected. If a family invites you in for tea on the trail, that is hospitality, not business. Don't push money into Grandma's hand. Say tanmmirt (thank you in Tashelhit) and ask me quietly if you want to give something. More in my Berber village tour guide.

Tipping on a group day tour: guide, driver and waterfall guide

On a shared Ourika Valley day trip from Marrakech, smaller tips per person are normal:

  • Minibus driver: 10–20 MAD per person for the day.
  • Guide on the bus: I'd say 20–50 MAD per person.
  • Waterfall guide in Setti Fatma: first ask if he is included. If not, locals usually ask around 100–150 MAD to the first waterfall. If he is included, 10–20 MAD per person is plenty.

Honest note: you don't need a guide for the first waterfall; the path has blue arrows. See Ourika Valley without a guide.

Toubkal and multi-day treks: guide, cook and muleteer

Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m) is usually climbed from Imlil, in the next valley west of mine. Organised treks often come with a guide and a mule team, and sometimes a cook. Tip once, at the end. The trekking company Rediscover suggests about 100–150 MAD per person in total for one to three days, mostly for the guide, plus a smaller amount for the mule team. Not sure you need a guide at all? Booked on GetYourGuide or Viator? Where your money goes

Platform prices include a commission; in 2025, operators reported rates of roughly 20–30%, sometimes more (Arival). And the guide who meets you may work for a day rate from the company that sold the tour. A cash tip goes straight into the hand of the person who walked with you. If you book directly with me on WhatsApp, no platform takes a share.

Dirhams, euros or dollars? How to hand over a tip

Dirhams are best. Can you tip in euros? Many people in tourism will take euro notes, but then they must go and change them. Euro coins are worse: nobody here can spend them in a shop.

  • Get small notes (20, 50, 100 MAD) in Marrakech. Cash machines are rarer in the mountains.
  • Give the tip at the end of the day, folded, with a handshake. No speech needed.
  • In a group, one envelope from everyone is easy.

When not to tip, and what helps more than money

Don't tip if your guide was rude or unsafe, or took you to shops you didn't ask for. In villages, please don't give coins or sweets to children; it teaches them to ask tourists. And what helps a small local guide more than money? An honest review. You can leave one right here on my website. Guests give my hikes 4.9 out of 5 on average, and one review can help the next nervous walker decide. Sterre wrote: "I felt really safe. Khalid helped me do a beautiful hike that I didn't think was possible with my fear of heights, haha!"

Quick reference: riads, taxis and restaurants in Marrakech

Who Typical tip (roughly, 2026)
Restaurant around 10% (5–10% in simple cafés)
Petit taxi round up to the next 5 or 10 MAD
Riad housekeeping 10–20 MAD a day, or a lump sum at checkout
Porter with a cart in the medina around 20–30 MAD
Hammam attendant 20–50 MAD

What's included on my hikes, so you know what's left

On my hikes there are no shop stops and nothing to negotiate on the day: we agree the price on WhatsApp before you come. It depends on how long the hike is. A shared hike, where I match you with other travellers on the same day, is 200–300 MAD per person (about €18–28). A private hike is 400–600 MAD for the whole group (about €37–55), so for two or more people it costs the same as shared or less. See my prices. Transport is not included: you get yourself to the meeting point we agree, about an hour by car from Marrakech. No car or driver? I can help you organise one when you book. Drinking water is included. Everything else (lunch, snacks, transport, any entry fees and tips) you pay yourself. Hikes are 5 to 15 km, depending on the route, and groups are up to 7 people.

A recent group on my Villages, Caves & Waterfalls hike walked through dry, desert-like hills, met goats and villagers, found a bat in the cave and some very big beetles. We laughed most of the day. See my tours, ask me anything on WhatsApp or call me on +212 625 015 514. And if you enjoy the day, a review helps me more than you think.

FAQ

Is 100 dirhams a good tip for a tour guide in Morocco?

Yes. For a private half-day tour, about 100 MAD per person is a good tip, and about 150 MAD per person for a full day is generous. On a big shared bus tour, 20–50 MAD per person is fair.

Can you tip in euros in Morocco?

You can, and many people in tourism will accept euro notes. But dirhams are better, because your guide can spend them right away. Avoid euro coins: they can't be spent in local shops. Get small dirham notes in Marrakech before you head to the mountains.

How much do you tip a driver guide in Morocco?

If one person drives and guides, tip him as a guide: roughly 300–400 MAD per group for a full day. If they are two people, the driver usually gets less, about 100 MAD per group for a half day and 200 MAD for a full day.

Do you tip during Ramadan and Eid?

Use the same amounts. Ramadan 2027 is expected to start around 8 February, with Eid al-Fitr around 9–10 March, but the dates depend on the moon. Your guide may be fasting, so eat and drink discreetly in villages. I do guide during Ramadan; message me on WhatsApp to plan the day.
